Despite being newcomers, South Sudan displayed determination in their debut FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 match against Puerto Rico.

The game saw Puerto Rico needing to rally from behind and relying on the performances of four players who achieved double-doubles. In the end, South Sudan’s efforts fell short as Puerto Rico secured a 101-96 overtime victory in Group B.

Even though South Sudan held a lead of up to 12 points, Puerto Rico’s experience ultimately made the difference in overtime, leaving South Sudan with a close defeat.

This game marks the beginning of South Sudan’s journey in the World Cup, where they showcased resilience against a seasoned opponent.

“My guys competed,” South Sudan coach Royal Ivey said. “They played hard. They played until the final whistle. We gotta get better from this. This is a learning experience. It’s our first game. You’re never up, you’re never down. You gotta keep it equilibrium and you gotta have composure.

“And this is a learning experience for us. We have to take the good with the good and the bad with the bad. There are no moral victories for us. We had that game and we gave it away.”
