In their inaugural appearance at the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023, South Sudan demonstrated strong determination when facing Puerto Rico.
The match highlighted Puerto Rico’s need to overcome a deficit and leaned on the performances of four players achieving double-doubles. However, South Sudan’s efforts were not enough, resulting in a 101-96 overtime victory for Puerto Rico in Group B.
Despite holding a lead of up to 12 points, South Sudan’s close defeat came as Puerto Rico’s experience prevailed during overtime. This game signifies the start of South Sudan’s World Cup journey, showcasing their resilience against a more seasoned adversary.
“It was a tough game,” South Sudan forward Kuany Kuany said. “It was our first time playing here and it was a matter of staying together and just try to grind it out.
“Puerto Rico did that and for us it’s a matter of learning from this game. We have to stick to what’s working. The team that stays together will pretty much be the one that wins.”
