Who is Hubie Brown?

Brown is now known for his voice on NBA games on ESPN but prior to his career as a broadcaster, he was a long-time NBA coach.

Brown was a two-time NBA Coach of the Year, winning the award with the Atlanta Hawks back in 1978 and more recently, the Memphis Grizzlies in 2004.

Brown’s NBA coaching career began as an assistant with the Milwaukee Bucks in 1972, holding that position until 1974. He took over as head coach of the Hawks in 1976, coaching in Atlanta for five seasons until 1981.

After he was fired by the Hawks in 1981, he was hired as the New York Knicks head coach in 1982. He coached in New York from 1982 until he was fired in 1987.

Brown then took a hiatus from coaching, devoting his time to his broadcasting career. 16 years removed from his last head coaching job, Brown was hired by the Grizzlies in 2002 and coached until 2004, before resigning from the job due to health-related issues.

In 2005, Brown was honored by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame as a contributor to the game.
